ride

Today was going to be a super duper double workout! This morning I was going to meet some friends and do a hot lap of Mercer Island and then this evening I was going to race at Pacific Raceways. Boom!

[Queue that Tony Basil song except change Mickey to Martin.]

But things did not work out as planned.

I got all geared up, rode to the Mercer Island lid and waited for the gang to show. And waited. This one guy in a Sofa Kings kit pulls up who I have never seen before (which means exactly nothing as I am the new guy in this group) and starts to say something about how he has not ridden in ages and how unfit he is and I can't help laughing to myself that a complete stranger would even bother. Do I have a clue what this guy's PR around the island is? Do I care? Exactly. Cyclists are messed up.

The official meet-up time is 6 AM so at 6:10 I tell this guy that I'm rolling. He elects to hang out a while longer.

The ride is fun! I keep it around 22-24 mph most of the time and enjoy myself. Since I'm alone and since I started late I don't double back and instead just loop the island and head home so I can get to work. A few miles in I did see Gentry M heading the other direction with a friend and I wonder if the ride had been called off or something? I'm always the last to know.

At work the weather turns to shit and by lunch it's dumping rain. At 3 PM I call everyone that was going to get a ride with me to the race and tell them I'm not going. Thank goodness none of them wanted to race in the rain either.

I have a brief moment of buyer's remorse when I get home and the sun blinds me while starting to dry up the streets but I found out later that attendance at the race was pitiful so all was right with the world again. Plus, that track holds onto standing water like crazy.
