Finland snow hike | snowshoe

Nice!

After our daily (almost literally!) nap I took off for a twilight/sunset walk. It was magic out. MAGIC.

I decided to set out on the snowmobile trails and after a bit I recognized where I was and so decided to walk out to the hut we had gone to a few nights ago to watch the northern lights. I expected it would take me about 45 minutes one way but it only took about 30!

Moving constantly for a change made me unzip my puffy jacket that I had on under my snowmobile suit, unzip the suit's main zipper and just hold everything shut with the Velcro flaps. I also opened the thigh zips a bit and then I was comfy.

snowshoe in Finland

Wow... It's freaking beautiful here. And cold.

We got all bundles up, learned how to attach our snowshoes and then shuffled around the woods near the Muotkan Maja Wilderness Lodge. My feet and hands were FREEZING so I kept taking little detours through the untracked snow in an effort to stay warm. It didn't really help.

For lunch we stopped in a teepee and cooked reindeer burgers and sausages over a fire!

Gold Creek Pond snowshoe

Shelley and I got out for our first snowshoe of the year today! Sort of a late start (for me) but what the hell... it was still lots of fun.

Note to self: this place gets REALLY, REALLY BUSY, even on New Years Day. Next time show up earlier.

Here are all the pictures and video.

ride | snowshoe

I felt much better today than yesterday… Apparently the college loser in me is still present as I drank much too much at our New Year's Eve party and paid the price yesterday. Laughable in retrospect, painful at the time.

So today I got in a fun ride AND Shelley and I went snowshoeing. Good times.

CIMG8196

The ride today felt rather difficult! :( Of course looking back I have not ridden in ages and so it's no wonder that running is not keeping me fresh for riding. Still, it was GREAT to get out with Tim W and catch up and talk about expensive bikes for a change. Normally that discussion has very little appeal to me today it was just fine.

At the end I was beat down.

Will I ever hang up my single speed bike? At this point I'm starting to think I should just stay on it and only enter single speed events. Screw all the geared stuff.

When Shelley and I got up to the snow we gained a bit of elevation on the road and then turned off on a side trail. The trail was really well travelled so after a bit we turned off of that that and started making our own way through the trees. FUN. And good thing we had a GPS. This is the way to go for sure, crowds while snowshoeing (or hiking, etc.) are a massive drag.

The snow was pretty fresh and the top 8" or so were super light. This is a really fun activity.

Squak Mt trail run | Gold Creek Pond snowshoe

I was looking forward to this day but after pummeling my legs so much yesterday I was a little weary or how I would feel. Luckily I had this to look forward to later.

CIMG8164

The Seattle Running Club group that showed up in the Squak Mountain State Park parking lot was larger than last week. This time it was resolved that we would stick together and so there was lots of doubling back down (and in some cases back up!) the trail until we met the last person and then it was off to the next intersection where this pattern would repeat itself.

It was okay, I kept alternating between feeling okay and feeling like shit so there were a couple of sections where I pushed the pace a bit but mostly I was just falling in line and trying to hang with the guy in front of me.

The trails were amazing once again! This is a really nice place to run and in spite of getting sprinkled on all morning I never got cold. I did get a little hungry which was probably just a result of being out here so long and not having enough to eat. But no bonk or anything.

With maybe half a mile to go of gently descending trail these two guys took off and I went in pursuit. We kept speeding up and up until we were moving about as fast as I could go. The trail was not always down, there were a few rollers and we bounded up and over them. VERY fun.

Once again my GPS (which was in the back pocket of my shorts) came up way short. Everyone else had at least 10 and the consensus was we ran at least 12. Especially with all the backtracking some of us did.

Then it was time to snowshoe!

As Shelley and I drove up to the pass the weather kept deteriorating and neither of us wanted to hike around in the rain but at the exact moment that we crossed the pass it started to get better and by the time we pulled into the parking area it had stopped altogether and there were even bits of blue sky showing through the clouds. The pass makes ALL the difference.

This is a fun place to walk around! Looks like it would be nice in the summer too. We saw tons of picnic tables, two cabins and the water in the pond was extremely clear.

We also saw bags of dog shit hung from branches by the side of the road we were walking up…?! Did people put it there thinking they would come back and get it on the way out? Gross.

The funniest thing we saw was this pair of snowmen that had shrunken after a couple of weeks of sublimation (we need more snow!).

The trail was really fun. I would go back.

snowshoe | fixed gear ride

What a great day! The sun was out, it wasn't windy and there was plenty of snow in the mountains and none in the city.

So logically Shelley and I had to play in the snow and then I had to go for a ride. Done.

CIMG8132

CIMG8134

We didn't get to the trailhead until almost 9:30 but I guess it's early enough in the season that the masses have not yet started showing up and parking was not a problem. Good times.

Today was just a short walk but there will be more.

Here are all the pictures.

After a quick snack I headed out on my Single Speed Bike. Having not ridden much lately and wanting to accelerate my ramp-up I figured this was the ticket.

Wow was I tired… or weak or something. I was crawling up all the hills but I resolved to stay seated for all of them and did do that even coming up Madrona and Union on the way home. Whew. On the upside I got a little better as I rode and whereas I had trouble maintaining 18 mph on the way out I held onto 20+ mph riding north on Rainier.

While taking a nature break at Coulon Park some other guy was washing his hands when a third guy walks in talking loudly on his cell phone. He glances around and then asks, "Is this the men's restroom?"

Really?

While on Lake WA Blvd it started to get a little darker and that was fun. I saw a bunch of kids with wheelbarrows setting out candles along the lake. Kinda like when they do that at Green Lake. Shelley and I will be there for sure.

Shelley and I finally got out to Gold Creek and hit the – apparently very popular – mixed use trail there. We saw a lot of people with snowshoes, people skinning up and people with old school fish scale skis shuffling up; even the occasional walker with no special equipment at all. At the bottom it was essentially a playground with loads of kids and sleds and parents with digital cameras filming their children while not interacting with them. It's the American way after all.

The conditions were fantastic. Hiking along was really fun as the green trees made for a beautiful contrast to the white snow and our pace was very conducive to talking.

After a bit we decided to turn around and then Shelley suggested we take a trail through the woods instead of staying on the road. Nice! We went down some pretty steep slopes and Shelley lost a basket on her trekking pole twice but we found it both times thank goodness.

We need to come back here with a GPS as there are a TON of trails to explore and the all look really fun.

One guy that was descending on skis had THREE dogs with him and they were all bounding along keeping up no problem. That was cool to see.

Snowshoes (at least ours) have fantastic traction. You can just go up a slope and not worry about slipping. Even going down is pretty predictable. And I used to laugh at people with trekking poles; no more. They have a noticeable function out here in the deep snow and I bet they would be really useful on certain hikes as well. I have become a believer.

Perhaps against my better judgment I joined Justin A and friends for an 'easy' 10 on Cougar today. I have been dying to do this run again and since Shelley and I had an activity planned for this afternoon another long ride was out of the question so in spite of the fact that it's still kinda long for me and in spite of the fact that I killed my legs yesterday I went. In attendance were Bill H and Mike A (not to mention Justin),  all super experienced ultra runners. And me. I have never run an ultra and was just recently back from seven weeks off. This was going to be an easy recovery run for them and it was going to be my longest run (in terms of distance and time) since my IT band got better.

And I made it! YES.

As I pulled into the parking lot the light rain was just turning to snow (it stayed snow as long as it precipitated throughout the entire run) so I put on an extra shirt.

As we climbed away from the cars the snow on the ground was so beautiful. The white reflected the light and really helped brighten up the conditions. Traction was fantastic and there wasn't even that much mud – I was surprised. I guess it's one reason these trails are so popular.

At first I felt super flat. No doubt from my effort yesterday. After two miles or so I was warming up and feeling significantly better. And speaking of warming up, I was worried while sitting in my car that my thin gloves would be totally inadequate and they turned out to be fine! No worries at all – I had dressed just right.

Shortly Bill was in front setting the pace. But then he had to fertilize the bushes so Justin was leading and that was nice as his pace was just that tiny bit slower. Justin had run the Fat Ass 50 yesterday and was pretty tired. Plus his Achilles was hurting him some. I was not complaining.

Bill was not out of the picture for too long... We heard him coming up the trail and on a longer climb when Justin had to take a leak he was back in front. As we climbed I suddenly realized that Bill and I had separated ourselves from Justin and Mike. It was fine at first but then I started to feel it. I was breathing harder than anyone else and did not have any zip in my legs.

ASIDE – I'm so glad I had woken up early and eaten something... I needed the calories big time.

It seemed like every time the trail tipped up Bill would pull away from me but because he was going easy and because he was working through an IT band injury himself I was able to catch up on each descent.

About 50 minutes in there were two times I had to walk for just a bit. To catch my breath and to give my legs a break. Finally we passed '20 minute tree' (as in 20 minutes to go) and I knew I would make it. Whew. I did not have to walk any those last three miles. I had to dig a little on the last couple of uphill sections but knowing I was so close to the end really helped.

At the end I was thrilled! I had finished the run with no pain, my shoes were super comfy (this was my first run in them) and I had dressed properly. The snow on the trail was a real treat and listening to Bill, Mike and Justin jabber away all the time is pretty f'n entertaining. Good times. And one of those days when you feel so fortunate just to be out here and to be able to do stuff like this.

To top off this most excellent Sunday Shelley and I drove up to the pass and went snowshoeing. It was the first time for both of us and it was a blast! We had intended on going to Hyak or east of Hyak but as we drove up they started to require chains... Note to self – buy an all wheel drive car already damn it! The cops were making everyone stop at the Denny Creek exit so we just parked and took off from there. It was so much fun! We will be back next weekend.
