Breathe Hot Yoga | Breathe Hot Pilates

Boom. And boom again!

This has become my Tuesday ritual and it's freaking awesome! Thank goodness Breathe Hot Yoga is on the way home as I tend to just not do stuff unless it's really damn convenient.

60 minutes of sweating followed by another 60 minutes of sweating. It's so much sweating that I have started bringing two yoga mat towels so I have a fresh one for each class. Otherwise I'm lying down in a lake. I know, lovely image, right? And I don't even sweat that profusely. This shit just works you over.

treadmill run | Expresso Exercise Bike | Breathe Hot Yoga | walk

This might look like a big day but it wasn't really.

The run was just another test like yesterday and I can now report that my right hip is fully effed up. What a drag! I have an appointment with my PT Neal Goldberg at FootWorks PT tomorrow to see what's up.

On the upside my heart rate is coming down while running!  I am 5-10 beats lower at the same speed so bonus. I also saw a couple of interesting bike on the UW campus. Just in case you didn't know what a 'fixie' was, Kent is here to help you out. One word: yikes!

And back when I was in the bicycle industry, everyone was trying to get rid of stem shifters...

Since running isn't working I hit the IMA at lunch and got on a bike.

After work I went to Breathe Hot Yoga in hopes of trying to warm up my hip. I think it helped a little bit.

walks | Brooks HQ | Breathe Hot Yoga

Wow, the Brooks Trailhead store is pretty amazing.

Today the SRC-Brooks Competitive Team got a tour of not only the new store but also Brooks HQ, the Research & Development Lab, the Apparel Department, the Cafeteria and of course the Roof Deck. Nice.

We saw 2016 shoe models, historic shoes from the 2012 Olympics, you name it. Very cool.

I walked to and from Brooks and then went to Breathe Hot Yoga after work. It felt good to take a day off from running.

treadmill run | Breathe Hot Yoga | walk

Easy run this morning with a little pick up at the end just to remind myself what foot speed is.

After work I dropped by Breathe Hot Yoga again, this place is great. I honestly wish I had more time to go here.

There was a massive backup on the street my bus drives down this morning. Cars were turning around so I did as well and walked to my 'Plan B' bus route.

On the way to the bus I saw something sad.

But I also saw something that made me glad.

cardio | Breathe Hot Yoga | walk

My legs are STILL wasted from doing stairs Tuesday. I obviously wrecked myself. Here's hoping I can get back to feeling good soon. It feels like I tore some muscle in my left quad mostly, like after a day of really aggressive weight lifting but even more so.

So at the gym this morning I just did some active recovery and that felt excellent. Good call in retrospect.

Then because I didn't ride or run I went to Breathe Hot Yoga for one of their Hot Vinyasa classes. Ryan was the instructor and he's pretty incredible. To me he's the best at talking you through all the poses so even a beginner can follow along. He also always has two or sometimes three options for each pose so even the advanced folks are challenged. Nice.

Didn't sleep so hot last night, it's been a while since that happened.

Expresso Exercise Bike | Breathe Hot Yoga

The alarm went off. I woke up. I went downstairs. I did not go to the gym. Oh well.

At lunch I did head down to the IMA for a spin on the Expresso exercise bike and it never disappoints.

After work I headed over to Breathe Hot Yoga for a great session. I've been taking all these Hot Pilates classes and it felt great to finally take a Vinyasa class again. Less of a pure work out but more balance stuff and more stretching.

Howe Street stairs | Breathe Hot Yoga | walk

Saw this on the way to work today. So small, so niche, so cute.

Those are 24" wheels and it's a single speed.

It's Tuesday so it must be time for Howe Street stairs! For the second week Jim Kodjababian and I were joined by Bradlaugh Robinson. Awesome. In two weeks this workout gets serious with four runners, it will be great to have company.

For a change the stairs were not incredibly hard, I felt pretty darn fresh today. Even the last runner was not that bad.

After work I had initially hoped to go for a run but chickened out at the last minute thinking it might make my hip flare up. Instead I went back to Breathe Hot Yoga. It was probably a good call but I felt like I couldn't get out of my own way at yoga. I was constantly tipping over and everything felt more difficult than usual. Oh well, some days are character building.

Not sure what happened this morning... I kind of ran out of gas or spent too much time in front of the computer. Then it was time to go to work. :(

But I went to Breathe Hot Yoga again after work and I am loving it! It does a body good as they used to say.

Howe Street stairs | Expresso Exercise Bike | Breathe Hot Yoga | walk

Quite the day of fitness. I seem to do this every time I'm forced to take some time off due to injury or just when I'm really well rested... And today was the first day back at the Howe Street stairs. Good times start now.

Howe Street has got to the most popular flight of stairs in Seattle for fitness. It's a very rare occurrence that I show up - no matter what time of day or year - and there isn't at least one other person there doing the same thing as me. Suffering. It's pretty cool. Every year starting in November my good friend Jim Kodjababian and I hit these stairs for 11 weeks. That time is now.

At lunch I hopped on the Expresso exercise bike at the IMA. It really is the best indoor bike I have ever ridden. If only the saddles were not so damn uncomfortable. I had no intention of going hard today but then my 'ghost' from a previous effort passed me and I sped up. :( I ended up getting a PR on this course by about 30 seconds and it was tough.

After work I headed over to Breathe Hot Yoga. More good times. My body really appreciates this.

Made it to the gym this morning for an abbreviated core session. But I did try so new movements which has to be a good thing. I think I do the same routine much too often.

After the gym I went to Breathe Hot Yoga for a proper 90-minute session of Breathe Hot Yoga. Good stuff.

Another day on the trainer (that's three!) and it still isn't boring. :)

And yes, that heart rate data is not accurate.

On the bus home I saw this.

walk | Expresso Exercise Bike | Breathe Hot Yoga | walk

Well, I missed the bus this morning so I had to walk to the bus I usually take home. Luckily it was not raining so no biggie. I forgot to record the AM walk.

At lunch I hit the Expresso Exercise Bike for the first time this fall - and it was kind of fun! This trainer really is more interactive than anything else I have used. Now if only the saddle was not such a couch. Kinda makes my butt sore.

On the way home I stopped by Breathe Hot Yoga for my second session this fall. It felt better than the first! Today was a real challenge actually, this is a great class and Ryan is a super instructor. And the class was FULL. 20+ people easy.

In addition to hanging on to the heart rate sensor on the bike I also wore my Fenix just to compare the results. Pretty close.

It was glorious going back to sleep this morning.

Howe Street stairs | bike commute | Breathe Hot Yoga

Whew...! The efficiency of a stair workout never fails to become obvious when you are on Howe Street. I managed to survive for one hour today and my calf didn't bother me in the least. That's some exciting shit.

I'm test driving the Samsung S Health app specifically because my new phone has a heart rate sensor and it's been ages since I knew what my waking heart rate was.

weights | bike commute | Breathe Hot Yoga

Another complete day of fitness! Some strength training, a little cardio and some balance/core. Not bad.

It was HOT at Breathe Hot Yoga today, total sweat fest. During one pose where my arms were clasped together in front of me, the sweat simply would not stop dripping from my elbows. Some real faucet action.

On the way home I rode past a water park and the water has finally been turned on, nice. Nothing screams summer like a water park in action.

weights | bike commute | Breathe Hot Yoga

I must be liking this routine. Gym in the morning, Breathe Hot Yoga in the afternoon.

At the gym I found a box that was a little taller than the bench I had been using for my step-ups, it made all the difference. My upper body is so weak it's tough for me to hold onto the dumbbells until the end of each set. :(

bike commute | Breathe Hot Yoga

What do you do when you can't run? Other stuff, like yoga. TWICE. Talk about a sweat fest, this was that.

As I rode into work I saw some ducks in Drumheller Fountain, I almost rode away but then decided to take a picture.

I also saw my sports medicine doctor today to discuss the results of my MRI.

What did Dr. Maxine Weyant have to say?

  • Bothe the x-ray and MRI were negative for a stress fracture and for a traditional muscle tear.
  • It sounds like a muscle strain/tendonitis/over use injury.
  • A tendon that attaches to the ball of my foot and wraps around my heel and then attaches under my calf behind the tibia is the culprit.
  • The prescription? More rest and lots of PT with Neal Goldberg at FootWorks PT. For a change, right? :(

On the up side, no cast or six weeks off from everything! On the downside, more freaking PT and rehab and recovery. I just can't get away from that shit this year it seems. It feels like I have been 'coming back' ever since September 2013.

core | bike commute | Breathe Hot Yoga

After three days off I tried to move my body again. My right calf? Still messed up. My weight? HOLY SHIT. I have not weighed this much in I don't know how long. Sitting around eating - lots - has taken it's toll.

On the up side, stepping into lunges on my right calf during yoga was not as bad as it could have been.

In an effort to get some definitive info about my calf issue I got a MRI this morning. I hope to see my sports medicine doctor (Maxine Weyant) in a couple of days to discuss the results.
