Our first ride in Maui and we tried to pick a route and distance that was not too severe but it kinda made us tired.

Last night on our spin this guy pulls up next to us in a truck and starts to chat us up. His name is Shawn and he rides and he was super excited to join us for a ride so we said sure, why not? See you tomorrow at 8.
We roll out and right away we're bombing one of the best descents I have ever been on. You can't go that super fast but there is no need as the twists and turns make 30 mph feel like 50. The surface was dry, there was no debris and I was in heaven.

After a bit the twists and turns cease and the road is really pretty straight but continues to lose elevation until you are down by the water. Even though you are losing elevation there are a LOT of wicked little pitches that put all of us in our smallest gears.

At the ocean the road surface changes from nice asphalt to what can only loosely be described as a patchwork of pavement. It's like someone threw handfuls of liquid road down all over the place and it is bumpy as hell. I rolled down to the parking lot with Shawn just to see around the corner and Greg, Aaron and Dean stayed back. Here we all grabbed a bit to eat and then headed back up.

And going up is pretty much what you are doing all the way back to the car! On the way down you are riding into a headwind that was about 15-20 mph today so heading back it's almost like having a hand on your back the whole way. The feeling is deceiving though, you are cruising along and think you can motor up the next hill so you get out of the saddle and then the steepness hits you and your legs die and you practically come to a halt. Ouch. Repeat.

The last nine or so miles are pretty solid ascending but we were not trying to set anything on fire so it was just a sweat bath. With the heat and tailwind everyone was seeing sweat rivers running down their legs and into their eyes; we were all remarking that it was the first time any of had perspired like this in ages!
We stopped at a deli a few miles from the car and got refreshed and finished off the ride. Nice.

First day in Maui and after assembling the bikes, going shopping and prepping dinner we thought we still had time for a quick spin so headed from Kihei down to the lava flow.

It was beautiful! And in very short order it was also very dark. Luckily we made it home. We saw the sunset, it was calm and the roads were drying up. I want more. Riding in just shorts and a jersey is a dream.

Still quite congested this morning and coughing, the cough lasted all the way to the start and I had a few fits during the race too.

This field was much larger than I thought it would be, we had a solid 30 riders and that was good. In attendance was RC R.

Usually the beginning of a master's race is FAST. That was not the case today. W cruised around for a bit until there were a few half-hearted attempts at breaking away. After a couple of these I gave it a go myself and got away solo but was fading WAY too fast... Last year and two years ago I felt stellar this time of year and this year not so much. It's not just being sick, my training has not been what it was in years past. After dangling off the front for a while on the back side of the course I eased up as no one was coming up to me and I could not go any faster.

I got in two more breaks both times with two Olympic riders. The first time we got caught pretty quick but the second attempt looked promising and he hung in for a while but the bunch still chased us down. Then with about half a lap to go, maybe a little more, another Olympic rider sneaks off the front and of course no one chases him down... They had at least six riders in the race and no one went after that. He won by about 30 seconds.

With about 5 km to go I saw RC was near the front so got next to him and told him to say right here! And he did it, nice. I stuck in the top 10 and then with about 1.5 km to go I got in 3rd or 4th spot right behind RC. As we passed 1 km to go the person in the front slowed a bit and RC did the right thing by going right on by and keeping the pace high. On the last incline before the 200 m sign (400 m to go?) a 20/20 rider went barreling past RC but I managed to grab his wheel so hit the sprint in 2nd spot. You can't ask for anything more but I just could not go like the guys behind me and apparently four people got by me. One BLEW by and left us for dead and it was close for the rest.

So I'm weak and I can't sprint. Half of that isn't anything new. When I was not attacking our pace was very manageable, not hard at all. No where to go but up.

I did not sleep much but I was hoping I would feel great today! Instead I felt like utter crap.

Not only can I still not breath well I was coughing tons, I felt really tired and I got fully dropped twice on climbs. And the pace was easy! I am obviously still sick and it's starting to piss me off.

Did I mention the company was great? Well it was. In attendance were Lane S, Greg K and Dean J. All of whom dropped me easily on the climbs.
