Volunteer Park Criterium

The calm before the storm.

CIMG8480

Having not raced at Pacific Raceways yet this year today was my first criterium in 2012 so very exciting. Last year the age cut-off was just 30(!), this year it was 35 which still makes for an excellent field. And the sun was out. It was going to be a good race. At the start line I saw lots of Garage Racing riders, the fast Keller Rohrback riders, a few Audi riders and we had Ryan Dean, RC Rogers, Greg Kauper and myself.

Go!

I had managed to stage right at the front so got away really well and rode in the front of the field the entire race. To make a long story short, here are the highlights.

  • Kenny Williams is back. He was in just about every move off the front including two solo moves that each lasted for at least four laps. And then he handily won the sprint. His thighs look huge. And strong.
  • Our team rode intelligently and always had at least one of us in each break, sometimes even two!
  • With two and then one lap to go I kept looking for the train from either KR or Garage and it never materialized so seeing Greg about four bikes behind me I kept it strung out on the last lap and up the hill. At the top of the hill Greg came around me on one side and Ryan on the other. We did the right thing, now we just need to be able to sprint better. :)
  • There was moss near the base of the climb right in the middle of the road. Nikos Mills went down. :( I felt my tires move at least twice. I guess that section of the course just never gets any sun.
  • I felt pretty good! I could easily move around in the bunch, was always near the front but I could not go 100% for more than about 10 seconds. I guess it's time to train for that sort of thing…
  • I freaking love my race wheels.

Thanks to forzavelo we have video coverage.

How can you go wrong with this song…

My race wheels don't have power (funny how you always want it all…) but it was encouraging to see my heart rate peak at 168 on that last lap. It means 1) I really can get my heart rate up above 160 and 2) I really was working as hard as I thought.

Sean Phillips said we averaged over 24 mph. Greg and I did two cool-down laps before I stopped my Garmin so perhaps that is due to my lower average. It did feel pretty quick most of the time.

After my race I spun around town before heading back to watch the last two races. Unfortunately it was pretty windy by then and I did not have adequate clothing so I had to bail 20 minutes before the end of the Pro/Cat 1-2 race. :( Some Jamis pro was putting on a clinic, he had been off the front in numerous breaks and was now off the front solo and had been there for numerous laps. I hope he won. Jesus these guys are quick. I parked myself at the top of the hill and to watch them come roaring up the climb and then accelerate out of the corner was amazing.

bike commute

I got sick yesterday. :(

This co-worker has been nursing a cold for about two weeks and it finally got the better of me. By the time I arrived at home I was already getting the sore throat and was sneezing (amazing how fast this shit progresses!) and after dinner I went straight to bed.

I was hoping I would be up for the gym this morning but no dice. At least I rode my bike to work (so I could easily see my dentist during lunch). I know, more fun.

ASIDE - aren't adults supposed to stop getting cavities if they take car of their teeth? I feel like I am very careful about dental hygiene and yet I still need to get a filling today. Bummer.
Thank goodness I felt somewhat better in the afternoon than in the morning, good enough to take the long way home again. Plus it was SO SUNNY… I just had to get outside. Not the fastest ride home but it was okay.

cardio

Rest day. For those not 'in the know' (whatever the hell elitist level of understanding that is, right?) that doesn't mean do nothing, instead it means 'active recovery' which  means a very low stress workout.

I'm smiling thinking back to a conversation I had with my dental hygienist yesterday as she was cleaning my teeth. She noticed I had ridden my bike to the appointment and asked how far it was. I told her it was just five miles and after expressing amazement (she is obviously one of those people that thinks of miles in terms of running and running is HARD) she asked where I live. I told her on top of Capitol Hill and she said, "Oh WOW, that must be a great BURN going home!" Burn. Nice.

'Gym speak' I call it. It's so something an aerobics instructor would say and what most people seek every single time they exercise. And then brag about. While on an active recovery day it's something I try to avoid. Not so easy when you need to climb all the way to the top of the hill.

This is the long way of saying I took the bus to work.

I discovered that I have to consciously limit myself to keep the rpm under 140 on this device.

Cycle U CompuTrainer | bike commute | core

Oh look at that, there really are lots of different CompuTrainer workouts and it isn't all just 2x20s. Say hello to 4x10 with just 60 seconds of rest between intervals.

CycleU_2012-04-04
Today I was joined by RC Rogers, Greg Kauper, Ryan Dean and Nelson Jay. Nice. For some reason I was hesitant about dialing up the watts but then after chastising myself I started at a threshold setting of 340 watts and kept it there for the duration. That last interval was hard (it's pretty much always at 95% of threshold or above) but I did it.

Looking around it seems like everyone else is riding at a lower wattage but I know they could be doing this workout at a higher setting. What am I missing? For sure I feel like I am getting adequate rest so why not go hard? In particular RC has been holding back during some training sessions and he is riding really well come race day. He has been adamant about sticking to the plan his coach gave him and it's obviously working. Plus, perhaps he's going harder on other sessions that I am not privy to. Maybe I should give this a try…

Here is the CompuTrainer summary.

Here is my PowerTap data. Note my low max heart rate, I have pointed this out before and I can only guess it's my age showing as I felt reasonable good/fresh today and like I said above, that last interval was tough.

At lunch I got in my core routine and managed to add an additional leg lift while doing the side plank! Make no mistake, that third one was hard. Then I took the long way home again. I LOVE this route... Not sure how I got teleported to Bellevue though. :) My starting point should have been where I finished/at home and then I rode to the University Village, to work (the UW) and then the long way home via Ballard. Obviously technology is not so foolproof. Or it could be that I washed this GPS? :(
