Cycle U CompuTrainer

OMG… will wonders never cease? Martin "old skool" Criminale got a power meter. I know, I'm shitting myself. Today was my first time using it.

Say hello to stats, right? I mean you have to a numbers freak/nerd to want one of these things; can I get an amen? Whatever, we'll see how it goes. One bummer is I only got the hub because the price was fantastic and my winter bike has disk brakes so this is only usable on my summer ride. At least I can use my summer bike on the trainer.

Thanks again to Cycle University for providing their fantastic facility for this.

On the docket today was - conveniently so - a threshold power test. We were doing two 10 km TTs and I guess the way this works is you average your average power from both rides and that is what you set your threshold power to for future workouts.

My first ride was 'not bad' (said in true understated amateur athlete style) but I suffered during the second effort. Back in the day when Cycle U was conducting these events for the public I did a TON and although the course was oh so familiar, metering my effort was not. Need to learn that again.

Oh yeah, and on my first ride my CompuTrainer was acting up and it took a bit for me to get rolling again. By that time I was well in arrears and playing catch-up. I managed to work my way from 7th to 6th but that was all she wrote. Still, a great workout!

During these trainer workouts I use Ryan D and Greg K as a reference point and both Ryan and I ran about 20 watts lower for the second effort.

So, I scored about 340 watts on the first effort and 320 on the second so my threshold power should be about 330 right now. Not great but not terrible either. I seem to recall my best ever was in the mid 340s to maybe 350? So the goal is to get there again.

My PowerTap was within about 5 watts of the CompuTrainer so that was nice.
