Squak Mt trail run

Two days in a row running on trails! I know!

Yesterday I ran most of the Bridle Trails Beer Ultra and today I got out with Daniel Paquette and Jon Robinson for some up/down/up/down on Squak Mountain. Squak is right across 900 from Cougar but the trails are different. There are fewer people over here and so less use, less maintenance and the surface is softer. I like it here.

On the first climb I was pretty winded to say the least but I got warmed up and/or the pace slowed down and by the end I was hinging with less effort.

This route was almost literally up, down, up and then down again. I'm guessing maybe one mile was flat.

It was a pretty uneventful and pleasant outing except for two things.

  1. Dan did his best imitation of a very dull axe.
  2. I fell down.

As we were climbing a gentle incline there were three trees that had been blown down across the trail. They were all about 5' off the ground so no big deal to duck under, you didn't even have to stop running. The trees were maybe 20' apart, Jon was in front, I was next and Dan was in back. Jon and I had just made it under the third tree trunk when we heard the most sickening wood-on-wood sounding thud.

We turned around to see Dan lying on the ground, his bottles in the bushes and his hand on his head. He had run smack into the third tree and it had taken his feet right out from under him as if he had just been clotheslined. Which he had. Just with a MASSIVE clothesline...

That brought us to halt for a few minutes while Dan got his bearings. To his credit he was back on his feet relatively quickly and immediately started running. Wow. When we got back to the cars I asked to see his head and it looked like the tree had removed a tiny patch of scalp. He had a little bald/bloody spot. Ouch. Good thing he is so tough.

I had a streak of runs where I was falling down. A lot. And the falls really hurt. The last three runs have been accident free thank goodness but when I caught my foot on a rock descending to the car I had visions of being a scraped up mess. Fortunately I came out with practically no injuries. My knee ached for a few steps and I had a tiny scrape but that was it. Whew.

I was tired from yesterday but not so that I was a boat anchor. I also realized that I developed a small blister yesterday and just switching shoes made my feet feel great. I'm always nervous wearing these as they are thin but on these trails it was no problem at all.

Thanks to these guys for the invite! I am slowly learning my way around these hills.
